The most exciting moment…
I can not believe it but, we are officially done with one room!!! It is by far the most exciting moment we have had since moving in. While working relentlessly on this house we have shifted our focus. Our original plan was to do everything all at once… well that wasn’t working. So, with the holidays upon us we needed to get one thing done at a time. With the motivation of family coming to stay with us for Christmas my first goal was to get our Kid’s Guest Room completed.
Having loads of nieces and nephews, as well as family and friends that live out of town, we knew from the beginning we wanted a room designated for kids when the come to stay with us. The difficult task is taking the ideas I have in my head a reality. This project turned out to be bigger then planned. I will go ahead and post some before photos here.
Just a few changes…
As you can see the previous homeowners where big fans of color. I am not, so one of the first things on the Kid’s Guest Room “to do” list was paint. Covering the paint was one of the biggest projects. We started with Kilz primer and decided on Behr paint in the color Silent White. I was beyond impressed with the Behr paint we purchased from Home Depot. The coverage is amazing and, in the ability, to use only one coat with a primer or two coats without one has been a life saver.
For the love of shiplap…
One of the biggest projects was the faux shiplap/paneled wall. The paint on this wall was a super deep color. I was concerned about getting coverage, so I had planned to wallpaper it as a accent wall. The problem is, these walls are very textured. I honestly did not think it would work. I am so much happier with what we decided on! Stay tuned for an upcoming post on the process.
Next, we added laminate floors that look just like wood, and we were ready for furniture! Trying to decide between bunk beds or two twins was tough. My childhood dream of bunk beds kept getting in the way. You can see by the placement of the windows two twins ended up working best. We ordered them from Wayfair. Everything from Wayfair has been impressive! Their prices are great, shipping times are great and if something goes wrong, they are always there to help. Now to decorate! I must be honest, I’m concerned that after Christmas this room is going to be bare. We will need to redo somethings when we take everything down, but I love the way it turned out.
One of the things that was important to me was having a place for all my books. I collect children’s books. I have struggled with overcrowding my book shelf so now we have some stored in the closet. When we do decide to add some additional decor, wall shelves are in our future.
My advice to anyone looking to start a project is, give yourself some time. Since we were figuring things as we went along it too longer then normal. It’s okay just enjoy the process! There is nothing more rewarding then walking into this room and knowing we did it all on our own.
What’s your next project? Redoing a kid’s guest bedroom? Or major construction? Share your thoughts and plans below! Everything is linked for you on our Link Tree. It can be found on Instagram. Tell us what you think!
