Before we even found a house, we found a kitchen. Crazy I know. However, walking through Ikea one day I saw what I thought would fit perfectly regardless of what house we bought. When my husband was even drawn to it, I knew I had a winner. Ikea offers a few different ways to design your kitchen. Ultimately, we decided to do our Ikea Kitchen Design in store, and it was one of the best decisions I made.

Your three options…
- Online Planner- Use IKEA’s online design planner and create your entire kitchen on your own.
- In Person Measurements and Design – For a fee IKEA can send someone to your home to help you measure what is needed for the design process.
- In Store Design Appointment- You do the measuring, they help with the design.
Now to Decide What’s Best…
At first impression I decided I was going to do this online on my own. I mean why pay someone when I could just figure it out? Well, after reading all my handouts and measuring instructions, as well as creating my account I was stuck. I don’t think it is overall a difficult site, but for me it was a bit too much. There are so many options it was hard to tell if I was choosing the right things and putting them in the right places.
Second option was to have them come out, measure and help me design. Unfortunately, we learned this is limited by zip code. They did not have anyone that services our area. So, we decided on the third and last option… a In Store Design Appointment.
Luckily, we had our contractor already doing work, so he was able to help me get the measurements I needed. With my fancy drawing I was able to schedule an appointment to design my kitchen I the store. We paid a small fee that will be applied to the purchase of our cabinets. I would recommend checking with your local store for fee information, as it may vary from place to place. Go to www.Ikea.com for locations near you.

The Day Finally Arrived…
To say I was looking forward to this would have been an understatement. The kitchen holds a huge amount of importance to me. I cook every day which to some may seem crazy. In addition to that we entertain often and have large family that needs a lot of space. Since I overthink everything, I already had a picture in my mind of exactly what I wanted our kitchen to look like.
The employee who assisted us listened to everything I had to say while navigating the design system. When we were done, he even took the time to disassemble and reassemble a cabinet to show us how easy it would be if we wanted to do our own installation.
The Best Part…
The Ikea Kitchen Design system is very detailed. The best part was the second it was completed we were able to see a full 3D rendering of exactly what our kitchen would look like. We left with printed plans, a price sheet and a list of the hundreds of pieces we would need to buy.

IKEA Seasonal Sales…
Now we wait. Why you may ask? Because Ikea is getting ready for one of the largest sales events, they hold all year. The Spring/Summer event is soon to come and in it we expect to find at least 10% off kitchens. Waiting it never fun but when you are spending thousands of dollars on your dream kitchen it’s best not to rush things. In fact, over the last week or so I have already thought of a couple small changes I want to make. Now, I get to head back to Ikea and have someone from the Kitchen Design team help me do it.
This is a huge project that we simply can’t wait to get into. We will take you along while we purchase, assemble and install our Ikea kitchen. Since they have made this process so easy for us, we would recommend them in the future!
